January 2017 So Far

It has been an incredibly busy January so far in 5th Class.

In our first week back at school we did some Doodle Journalling and drew our hopes and dreams for 2017. We found this tricky to start with but we soon got into it! DoodleJournal

We have been learning about Wonder Women in history and we also discussed the Wonder Women in our own lives. We talked about the women who make a difference in our lives and the women who we find inspirational. Michelle Obama was mentioned, Temple Grandin, Marie Curie and Amelia Earhart to name but a few. So many of the children also spoke about their mothers, their aunts and their friends and the inspiration that these amazing women have brought to their lives! Wonder Women

We designed and made robotic hands for science and we found out how fingers actually move and do all the amazing things that they can do! Our robotic hands are made out of cardboard, straws and string. The strings allow us to see how our fingers move. The hands took a little while to make but they were certainly worth the effort.

Last week we went to LYIT and joined lots of other schools in the Hour of Code. We were taken to one of the amazing computer labs in the college and we got to work on lots of coding activities for a full hour. We had great fun problem solving and working out how to make our Flappy Birds, Elsa and Pandas move in the direction we wanted them to!HowToLookForALostDog

We started our new class novel this week. It is called ‘How to Look for a Lost Dog’ by Ann M. Martin. The book is about a little girl called Rose and her dog Rain. Rose has autism and her dog is her best friend. We have only read a few chapters but so far we have found out lots of information about Rose and the things she really likes. An audio file of each chapter will be available on Edmodo for anyone who would like to listen to the book while they read.

We had a visit from Oscar’s mum, Taryn, today and we had great fun making stress balls using sand and balloons. Taryn showed us how to make them step by step and taught us some valuable ways to cope with stress. We talked about what we do to help us manage stress and we know that talking to someone we can trust is one of the most important things we can do if we feel stressed, sad, upset or lonely. Thank you so much Taryn for coming in today!
